Emerson Unstitched was a live, one hour, in-studio special program that aired on the Emerson Channel in April, 2011. The show, produced by Matt Caruso, documented a design competition between three fashion designers. The three designers were to create unique fashion lines over the course of a month in line with a particular theme of one of EmMagazine’s issues. EmMagazine is Emerson’s premiere fashion publication and would award the winner a spread in their final issue of the 2010/2011 year. The three contestants were documented over their design process. The competition escalated to a showcase, runway presentation, and review by judges in this televised finale.

The focal point of the show was a 24′ runway provided by United Staging and Rigging of Boston, MA. The runway was constructed of lucite topped with frosted plexiglass. This allowed us to add character and mood to the runway in each piece of the show. The end of the runway, furthest from camera, was capped with a custom logo piece, stitched of diffusion. These two diffused surfaces worked in tandem to create unique looks for each of the fashion lines as well as the show’s overall look during the finale. The lighting played an integral role in setting the mood during the deliberation, elimination, and winner blocks of the show. The show’s overall cohesiveness and dramatic, yet bright design lent itself to the fabulous designs created within the competition.
