EDC | Stages

Emerson Dance Company is the resident dance company at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Their an energetic and exciting family to collaborate with. Each season they perform a showcase. Each show has a concept and there are anywhere between 15 and 25 dance pieces on the program for the night. As EDC’s resident designer, I work with the choreographers and directors over the course of a month to construct the production.

Stages was my third piece with Emerson Dance Company. At this point in my relationship with EDC, I’ve become familiar with many of the choreographers, their style, and the pace at which they work. With all of EDC’s productions we have a very short time to tech each piece. With only about 30 minutes each, having color palettes, costume swatches, and song information prepared is incredibly helpful in getting the show designed in a timely fashion. The concept for Stages was rooted in both the act of performance and the progression of ones self through life. The majority of the pieces, weren’t only emotionally based, but were more story driven and expressively engaging. The design of the show allowed each piece to be free of the show and carry it’s own unique look as a ‘stage’ independent of the rest.
