About Me
My name is Kirk James Miller. Yes, like the great Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek. A recent graduate of Emerson College, I earned my BFA in Theatrical Design with an emphasis in Lighting.
I was born and raised in Stratford, Connecticut. My father a musician and my mother a doctor, I grew up heavily influenced by both the arts and sciences. Even at a young age I’ve had an incredible love for music. I’ve been a percussionist since I was old enough to lift a pair of sticks and music hasn’t left my life since. My interest in the ever expanding world of technology, and lighting technology specifically, has kept me engaged in this ever-growing field.
I was always the small kid with big dreams. Attending concert after performance after production, I fell in love with the world of entertainment (and the magic of Disney – just a bit). Expression through dance, music, spoken word, and performance has always enthralled and impressed me. I was in my teens when I developed a particular interest and knack for lighting design. The way light enhances and accentuates a performance motivated me to further experiment in the field. From there, I became completely engrossed in theatre and eventually my passion for design extended to music, dance and television. I recognize that the creative possibilities in design are limitless and I am excited to learn more every day.
I am also eager for collaboration. I consistently pursue projects that encourage me to push the boundaries, ultimately resulting in personal growth. Working on hundreds of productions, I’ve made wonderful friends whom I share these creative experiences with.
There’s more to me than just my design career. I’m also a production and event photographer and will drum whenever and wherever I can. In my free time I also enjoy travelling, swimming and a nice tall glass of chocolate milk. I appreciate good food and, with the help of my close friends, hope to become a better cook.
My father once told me “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I consider myself very fortunate not having worked a single day so far.
